Work Experience

Self-employed contract engineer and consultant4/2009 – present

Accepted four major offers and several short-term contracts in a variety of industries.  Each drew upon my skills and experience in the domains of security, software architecture, systems engineering, and technical leadership.

UNICON, Int’l 11/2013-6/2014

Contract software engineer, employed in the software integration team supporting pre- and post-paid billing systems for a telecommunications equipment manufacturer.  Most significant contributions were authoring of complex methods and procedures documents for feature deployment in laboratory and live networks.

Volt 11/2012-5/2013

Contract software engineer to a large Aerospace manufacturer.  Implemented a variety of features for a helicopter training simulator.  Most significant contributions were the design and implementation of simulators for a number of external test systems and the internal processing of simulated failed equipment within the aircraft.

CADTEL Systems 11/2011-6/2012

Consultant to vendor of network management products.  Identified a number of new potential products that would satisfy market demands and compliment the current major product line.  Most significant contribution was definition of key features that comprise a proposed new suite of service provisioning and activation products.

Superior Group4/2009-4/2011

Contract engineer, serving a variety of roles in the architecture organization of a major defense contractor.  Defined the architecture of new software features, via UML and the modeling software. Also lead the design, implementation and integration of several features, including the analysis of potential security vulnerabilities.

David P. StrandPage Two

Alcatel-Lucent (Lucent Technologies, AG communication Systems, et al)6/1977 – 10/2008

Served in various business units in positions of increasing responsibility, dominantly technical in nature.  Initially involved in product development, responsibilities expanded to include architecture, marketing support, and customer interaction in latter years.

Consulting Member of Technical Staff 2002 – 2008

Led teams in defining architecture, system models, and requirements of network management and operations features for network elements of converged VoIP and data network products.  Led efforts in carrier interaction to refine process flows for fault and alarm surveillance, subscriber service and network provisioning, performance data monitoring, and usage data generation and collection.  Defined default security policies for use in VoIP and multimedia networks.  Served as business-level SME and corporate resource for network management, and NGN network management evolution.  Also served as business-level SME and corporate resource for INFOSEC-based security in VoIP and multimedia networks

Engineering Fellow 2000 – 2002

Led the systems modeling of network management and operations architectures for the evolution of traditional circuit switching to VoIP and other packet technologies for wireless and wireline networks.  Identified the likely operations process flow impacts with the migration to packet technologies.  Led the definition of system architecture and requirements definition of network management features to support products based on packet networks, SIP, and industry best practices.  Provided senior-level management with regular updates on industry trends and key issues facing wireless and wireline carriers in the domain of network management technologies.

Architecture Leader1996 – 1999

Led teams in modeling alternative architectures for network management functions of NGN products, providing Alcatel-Lucent with a competitive edge in the marketplace.  Anticipated operations process flow impacts with the introduction of NGN networks, and the resulting impacts to network management systems and operations features required by network elements.  Led several network elements through certification processes.  Also led teams in the analysis of new and emerging technologies to assess their maturity and viability for application in Alcatel-Lucent products.

Early Career Evolution1977 – 1996

Began as an entry-level software developer, rapidly promoted to team leader, and eventually led multiple technology transfer programs from other divisions within the corporation.  Promoted into a management track, in first and second-level management positions, responsible for the development of alarm surveillance, billing data collection, and element management systems, supervising teams of fifteen to twenty engineers, and three first-line managers and with a staff of over fifty engineers.  Returned to a technical track as a senior engineer, playing a significant role in the introduction of object-oriented analysis, design, and programming into the product development organization.
