Mr. Yu served as key contributor and technical lead for several core applications (GOTS, Open Source) that support NIH National Children’s Study (NCS) project.

·   Involved in the development of NCS Research Data Warehouse (RDW) which is a Big Data data lake that accommodates a diverse variety of NIH NICHD NCS study data. RDW allows the analyst to draw connections between all data within the study; be it questionnaires, direct observation, DNA Sequences, diverse extant data, as well as any native structure, XML, binary, etc. It was built using Big Data technologies: Hadoop, Accumulo, Kafka, Storm, Pig, and Hive. Involved in the initial design and led the effort of adding Hive capability to the stack. Installed, configured Hive component and developed Hive extension (Java) to support Accumulo as the backend storage. Designed table schema and data models for Accumulo to store NCS study data.

·   Developed bulk ingestion process into Accumulo using Python scripts to load EPA NATA dataset.

·   Developer R functions to correlate EPA NATA data with American Community Survey PUMS housing data. 

·   Also involved in the RDW Analytics Web interface development using Spring, Jetty, and Hibernate. This interface allows users to upload data set, create Pig query, update query, submit job and view job status.

·   Led software architecture effort to deliver Business Intelligence solutions for NIH NIGMS grant management division by integrating SAP Business Object reports with Line of Business applications (.NET, JAVA, Cold Fusion) using BO RESTful web services.

·   Architected and developed a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) based study management system (SMS) prototype during the NCS exploration phase.  It was based on a wide-range of GOTS, COTs and open source products including SugarCRM (PHP), Patient Study Calendar (Java) and Mirth Connect (Java ESB).  Developed and extended PSC web services using JAX-WS to support NCS study protocol management.  Prototype was well received by the client and led to some key components being selected in the study management system Information Management System (IMS).

·   Led a data migration project from Excel/Access/XML to SugarCRM SQL Server. Evaluated date migration tools and developed data migration strategy. Recommend using open source Talend for ETL and Bulk load. Created Talend components (Java), jobs and custom SugarCRM connector that successfully load 2GB data into NCS SugarCRM system.

·  Led the development of integration between a Data Collection system (C#/.Net) and Case Management system (PHP) for NCS project. Analyzed technical requirements and developed Interface Control Document. Designed and architected web service APIs based integration solution.  Led the implementation including creating workflows, data classes, data elements, coding (C#, PHP, SQL) and deployment using Agile methodology under the CMMI framework.

·   Managed, designed and implemented a Case Management System for NCS using open source CRM product- SugarCRM. Led the NCS SugarCRM open source development effort that includes requirement gathering, custom module design and development, package build and deployment. Also deployed NCS SugarCRM on Amazon Web Services (AWS) in order to demonstrate feasibility and value to the client.  

·   Involved in the development of NCS Vanguard Data Repository (VDR) system. Architected and developed the PII scrubbing module (C#) to mask Personal Identifiable Information (PII) from data repository. Redesigned the XML file validation and upload process.  Also led the ETL performance and scalability improvement effort to more than double its performance.

·   Designed and developed a prototype that demonstrates data transfer between a disconnected Laptop and iPad iOS application via Personal Hotspot. It aims to support NCS offline data collection mode.

·   Served as Senior Consultant for Content Store UI implementation using Microsoft Silverlight 2.0. Developed a Mac Finder style user interface that allows user to quickly view contents of a file without opening it or running an application. Used Ajax extensively to improve user experience. Data was retrieved from backend by calling WCF services.

·   Involved in building a Proof-Of-Concept using Microsoft Dynamic CRM 4.0. Prototype has been presented at Microsoft Technology Conference.
