Designed, developed and loaded a data warehouse to act as a central repository for payment and Inventory for Brighton.  Worked with local and remote small businesses providing various DBA services such as training, Linux and Oracle upgrades, database tuning and optimization services.  Client had a DBA onsite and my role was to assist and educate him on the important aspects of configuring databases properly, daily PM procedures, creating database instances/objects, tuning SQL and PL/SQL/T-SQL Etc.  Created database programs such as procedures, functions, triggers in T-SQL and PL/SQL for data loading, cleansing, maintenance. Other projects included comparing databases for job suitability such as MongoDB, NoSQL, MySQL, Oracle, SQL Server etc. Configuring and testing programs to automate and simplify IT workload using RMAN, LINUX, scripting languages testing various approaches for hardware like disk arrays, memory, CPUs and installing applications on the hardware like Oracle with ASM among many others allowing the staff to focus on the future and education helping the staff to be much more valuable.  In one case we tested MongoDB against Oracle for performance, features and data migration documenting the results for selection. Designed and developed a data warehouse to act as a central repository for payment and inventory and billing systems. Combined disparate data sources into a central operational data store for reporting and decision making.  Erwin was the primary tool for modeling and DDL Source code generation and database object management. It was a relatively small and complex system that utilized partitioning and parallel design.  Informatica provided the ETL with custom tools for reporting.   Extensive PL/SQL packages are used to load data, validate data and automate various data management functions.  This is the 1st system that Sports Authority has used to provide a common, uniform view of their sales information resulting in much better decision making for store manager for product placement.

 

Veteran Affairs  - Apr 2010 – May 2011 - Contractor

Data Architect / Modeler / Development DBA

Responsible for all design and development for the Veterans Affairs payment disbursement and billing system. The system handles over 7 billion dollars a year in Veteran’s healthcare needs nation wide.  The heart of the system is a multi-node Oracle RAC Data Warehouse modeled with Erwin and the database utilizes partitioning and parallel query heavily to improve performance for querying Dimensions and Fact tables. Talend and extensive complex PL/SQL packages are used as the ETL components for legacy system data loading and data validation processing while SSIS and Taland are the ETL components on the remote SQL Server systems.  Billing and payment information is distributed from the data warehouse to hundreds of SQL Server data marts at V.A. hospitals throughout the country. 3rd party .NET applications allow hospital staff to update patient records and billing info.

Created all new development including table design, primary keys, foreign keys, indexing, stored procedures, database triggers in SQL Server 2005 and 2008 platforms.  Maintained many Erwin data models representing all backend processing, decision support and data marts.  Was the knowledge expert for the entire business.  Created many SSIS packages, developed backup and restore procedures, created T-SQL stored procedures and functions to support new business initiatives.

Contracted to USGS as the Single Source Provider of Specialized Oracle Solutions for the storage and retrieval of earthquake and seismic information for the entire United States and world.  Hardware and software profile for USGS Earthworm project centered around Oracle 9i/10g on NT and MySQL. USGS used very complicated PRO*C and PRO*Cobol applications for data acquisition and mapping of seismic events.  The system was triple redundant with another entire system as spare. 

Designed and created the monitoring system for the USGS and was then awarded the responsibility for remote database monitoring and administration for the Earthworm project systems.  Contributed heavily to the architecture and hardware design of this critical government resource.  Also provided onsite and remote monitoring, maintenance, tuning, upgrades and disaster recovery service on any monitored system at USGS within the country.

 

KB Toys, Denver, CO - Mar 2003 – Jun 2004

Sr. Programmer/Developer/Analyst

Completely responsible for requirements gathering, design and implementation of a point of sale data warehouse allowing KBToys to do shopping cart analysis and learn about customer behaviors.  The data warehouse grew by about 1Gb daily during the off season and 3-4 Gig daily before Christmas.  Data was extracted from legacy systems and registers and transformed using complex PL/SQL. Various Oracle techniques were used to maximize performance allowing data loads to complete in minutes dwarfing the performance of other systems in use.  The total data warehouse size was approaching 500G within the 1st month in production.  Evaluated Oracle Discoverer and Business Objects as the query tool.  Hardware  and software profile for KBToys was Sun 6500 Servers using a Hitachi disk array and a Network appliance disk array utilizing Oracle 9i Database Products with parallel query and partitioning options. 

United Agri Products, Greeley, CO (UAP) - Oct 2002 – Mar 2003 – Contractor

Responsible for Database Administration of a distributed warehouse management system

(Red Prairie).  The system consisted of 7 Oracle instances, RF interfaces,

Oracle Forms running on a Citrix Farm.  Responsibilities included Configuring

IBM’s High Availability product HA/CMP, upgrading and patching Oracle,

Monitor, tune and configure databases implementing Oracle Enterprise Manager

and devising the database administration and security strategy with a prerequisite towards one point of contact and ease of use.

Designed and implemented database backup and recovery strategies using Oracle RMAN and Legato managed from OEM again with one point of contact for management.  Worked with Red Prairie and the UAP users to solve issues, log bugs etc. Hardware  and software profile for UAP was IBM AIX 6000 Servers with UNIX Operating Systems utilizing Oracle 8i and 9i Database Products.

·  Senior Database Architect – Rebate Tracking and Product Segmentation

Responsible for requirements gathering, logical and physical database design, database creation, hardware and software selection, application design, development of the ETL using complex PL/SQL stored procedures and creation of Forms and Reports using Oracle 9iDS and 9iAS.  The application is a data mart that received transactional data from a mainframe daily.  Some application specific data was maintained and inputted via Oracle Forms.  The application allows UAP to calculate rebates of product sold resulting in recovering millions of additional dollars each year. The hardware profile was Microsoft 2000 Servers utilizing Oracle 9i Database.

Responsible for setting up the Data Management practice and directing an eleven-member team across multiple projects.  Successfully added and blended a Data Management practice that had large application design expertise to the existing creative work environment of XOR providing XOR clients an entirely new offering.  The resulting practice was so popular at XOR other offerings were modeled after the data management practice.  Acting as the technical lead during client engagements tasked to always provide architecture and software engineering guidance during client meetings, design sessions, feasibility studies etc.  Responsible for implementing design standards across all of XOR ranging from naming conventions to database monitoring techniques.

The project involved complete replacement of business critical applications for Avert including migrating legacy COBOL ISAM flat files to Oracle relational tables. This resulted in Avert being able to add new products very easily allowing Avert to take advantage of new business opportunities quickly and inexpensively.
