Experience Details:
DATA ARCHITECT & SENIOR DATABASE ADMINISTRATOR: Appia Inc, Durham, NC, 2/2013 – current.
Provided data architecture, data infrastructure, and database administration expertise in support of Appia’s mobile device
ad-serving operations.
· Rescued the SQLServer2008 R2 Cluster environment from falling over under extreme ad-serving load of 100M+
transactions per day. First order of business: change the primary key of the busiest table containing 1.5 billion rows
from INT to BIGINT with no ad-serving down-time. Implemented various other improvements in tuning, indexing,
data archiving and roll-off, and periodic voluntary fail-over.
· Replaced the SQLServer2005 analytics database with Vertica6.1 columnar analytics database deployed into AWS,
re-designed the analytics schema to a simplified dimensional model (aka “star schema”), and provided consulting to
engineering around schema design and query tuning. First evaluated Vertica, Calpont InfiniDB, and Amazon Redshift,
and selected Vertica. Data load times dropped from hours to minutes, and analytical query execution times dropped
from minutes or hours to seconds, even as data has continued to accumulate.
· Introduced Tableau into Appia’s business operations. Business users now have dashboards and online query capabilities
that previously required an engineering or ops request. Tableau + Vertica is a powerful combination that delivers
actionable information into the hands of business decision-makers in seconds rather than days…it’s been called a
“game-changer for Appia” by the business users.
· Implemented Cassandra NoSQL multi-node multi-region datastore for 1st pass mobile device user profiling data
estimated to grow to around 5 billion rows.
· Researched and evaluated several NewSQL solutions for integration into Appia’s data infrastructure to support future
user profiling, mediation, and real-time bidding initiatives.
· Hired one additional SQLServer DBA for operational support.
SENIOR DATABASE ADMINISTRATOR: Lulu.com, Raleigh, NC, 4/2011 – 2/2013. Provide database administration

MongoDB v1.3, including backup and recovery, physical architecture, replication, stand-by configuration/high
availability/failover, SQL performance tuning, schema design and deployment consultation, exposure to database storage
snapshotting via NetApp, automated Nagios monitoring, data lifecycle management, internal ETL & BI consulting, and all
other endeavors database-related.
· Support, tune, and provide schema design consulting to large-scale Postgresql 8.3/8.4 databases for legacy e-commerce
site, including SQL performance tuning, high-availability stand-by configuration, NetApp storage snapshot processes,
monitoring, data lifecycle management, and ETL processes. Strong focus on SQL performance tuning, resulting in
orders of magnitude improvements in tuned queries, and minimal down-time schema management/change deployment,
leading to reductions of site maintenance downtime.
· Configure, install, support, tune, and otherwise own new Oracle11R2 environment for new e-commerce site, including
initial deployment, physical architecture, backup/recovery, SQL performance tuning, replication, high-availability
stand-by failover configuration, and ETL processes.
· Support, configure, troubleshoot, and performance tune MySQL database infrastructure, including backup/recovery,
high-availability replication/standy configuration, snapshots, SQL performance tuning, data lifecycle management, and
schema management consulting.
· Own physical architecture, administration of new MongoDB deployment to support new publishing site.
· Act as consultant to BI/reporting team and product engineering in support of dimensional/star schema data modeling,
ETL processes, Business Intelligence technical infrastructure, and operational management.
· Introduce Change Data Capture and Talend ETL data integration tooling and self-serve Business Intelligence
infrastructure into the organization, supporting proof-of-concept and deployment efforts, as well as defining the
high-level architecture.
· Examine and benchmark BI columnar database products, such as InfiniDB, InfoBright, and open-source MonetDB.
