Director of Network Operations / Sr Network Engineer

Hired to lead and develop the IT infrastructure of the rapidly growing and changing ministries of Rick Warren’s

Saddleback Church (author of “The Purpose Driven Life”). Developed a lean team of 4 system engineers and 4 service

desk professionals to build and oversee the shared IT infrastructure across multiple ministry, non-profit, and for-profit

organizations. In a very hands-on role, served as primary network architect for e-commerce, Internet broadcasting, data

center, and complex multi-site operations.

Major Accomplishments:

• Served as the technical lead for multiple office, campus, and venue network build-outs. Buildings ranged in size from

a few hundred to tens of thousands of square feet. Site operations included traditional office space, entertainment and

worship venues, a seminary college, an ecommerce fulfillment center/warehouse, bookstores, restaurants, a food

pantry/warehouse, and medical facilities. Also included was the development of the fiber plant and network

infrastructure of two 100+ acre campuses.

• Deployed a centrally managed, multi-site wireless infrastructure using Cisco technologies. The solution included

secured access for guests, limited access for BYOD equipment, and full access for organization owned devices.

• Managed a virtualization project to successfully convert 90+ servers using VMware, Hyper-V, iSCSI SAN, NetApp ESeries,

and Dell Equallogic technologies.

• Assisted development teams with cloud application deployments on Amazon Web Services and Windows Azure

platforms.

• Designed, built, and managed a 10 site wide area network using metro-Ethernet, traditional T1, and multi-site VPN.

• Performed deployment and oversight responsibilities for a large, rapidly changing, multi-site VOIP phone environment.

Managed staff technicians, vendors, and project schedules to successful completion of all initiatives. Used a

combination of on-premise Cisco Call Manager technologies, traditional T1, SIP trunks, and pay-as-you-go cloud

delivered services.

• Managed, deployed, and maintained in-house and cloud-based data centers with up to 160 Windows 2008/2012 and

Linux servers. In a very hands-on role, managed equipment and services including Active Directory, DNS, DHCP,

ASA firewalls, Citrix NetScalers, Blue Coat packet-shapers, VPN appliances, Cisco routers and switches, etc.

• Built unified communications solution using Exchange 2010 and Cisco Call Manager. Used a combination of in-house

and Microsoft cloud-based solutions to maximize capabilities and cost savings.

• Served as infrastructure team lead on a project to scale up a video production SAN to accommodate hundreds of

terabytes of primary, near-line and off-line tape storage. Upgraded systems from an Apple XSAN to Quantum

StorNext file system while adding additional NetApp E-Series storage.

• Developed budgets, policies, and procedures for all aspects of Network Operations. Recent accomplishments include

the addition of BYOD policies to accommodate personal device usage for guests, interns, contractors, college

students, and employees.

Directed the team responsible for data communications, telecommunications, data security services, and web

infrastructure for North American operations. Responsible for developing department direction, driving projects and

initiatives, and managing daily operations. Successfully utilized resources from internal staff, outsourced vendors, and

other business units to accomplish objectives.

Major Accomplishments:

• Increased network performance by rebuilding the corporate campus and data center network. Upgraded network core

to Cisco 6509 switches and replaced distribution/access level equipment with no downtime or impact to production

systems.

• Deployed network monitoring systems to ensure reliability of 15-site corporate frame-relay wide area network.

Technologies uses were Ipswitch WhatsUp Gold and Netreo Omnicenter.

• Served as project lead for a global wide-area-network initiative. Worked with vendors and leaders from several other

North American divisions and corporate offices in Japan to ensure proper network design and rollout.

• Led the networking efforts for disaster recovery planning. Worked with service providers to define requirements, put

together plans, and successfully execute recovery tests.

• Led the effort to protect company data assets by creating and implementing data security policies. Worked with

various IT and business unit teams to develop and implement policies. Followed up by performing periodic audits,

inspections and network penetration analysis.

• Initiated a security incident response team to prevent or minimize network security breaches. Led and coordinated

diverse teams from several departments to develop, document, and implement all necessary plans.

• Implemented a comprehensive intrusion detection system program using Internet Security Systems products.

Performed vendor evaluations, negotiated contracts, and lead project to implement systems.

IT Operations Manager

Built an IT Operations Team from 10 to over 50 associates managing the development and operations of critical business

systems in a very rapidly growing environment. Management responsibilities included oversight of network infrastructure,

IT security, disaster recovery services, web-based systems, telecommunications, service desk, and desktop support.

Developed and executed departmental vision, strategies, and projects, vendor relationships and outsourcing strategies to

meet business objectives.

Major Accomplishments:

• Served as technical lead for 60+ branch openings and expansions to accommodate the rapidly growing business.

Also managed two successful data center build-outs and relocations.

• Successfully led IT integration projects through three company mergers.

• Served as project executive for a $2 million initiative to migrate from NetWare/GroupWise to Windows 2000 Active

Directory and Exchange 2000.

• Performed oversight responsibilities for successful implementation of IT security program. Worked with various

business and IT leaders to develop appropriate policies, deploy monitoring systems, and perform appropriate audits.

• Drove initiatives to successfully develop disaster recovery plans including requirement definitions, contract

negotiations, and test execution. Served as chief architect for several successful disaster recovery tests.
