Principal Solutions Architect

 

Supported a global Sales Engineering organization by reviewing, designing and developing managed hosting and cloud computing solutions for enterprise-wide products and services. Served as the primary Subject Matter Expert (SME) for Unix, Linux, Oracle and Open Source products and technologies. Responsible for identifying business requirements, and designing technical solutions for products hosted both in Verizon’s Cloud platform, as well as integrated legacy-hosted and co-location environments. 

 

Collaborated with Implementation and Operations teams to insure solutions leveraged ITIL and Information Security best practices, that could be supported by teams using existing bench strength.  Reviewed operational staff levels to develop resourcing roadmaps that increased our competitive advantage with new skill sets or additional technical training.

 

Worked with Product Management to identify potential new products when repeatable custom solutions could be packaged and added to Verizon’s standard offering.  Supported business process re-engineering for the new products with measurable benchmarks that reduced the need for custom engineering requests.

Lead a team of Senior System Engineers responsible for product development across multiple platforms including Solaris, Red Hat Linux, HPUX, AIX and Windows. Duties included managing product development time-lines, establishing project priorities, and gathering and reviewing product enhancement requests.  Planned and organized deployment of new system infrastructure supporting automated provisioning systems in foreign and domestic data centers.

 

Served as lead engineer in developing a standard implementation of Solaris Zones virtualized operating system environment as a custom request from a large customer. Developed supporting documentation including technical specifications, implementation and standard operating procedures.

 

Managed a computer lab and lab support staff. Lab consisted of multiple computing, networking and storage platforms.  Computer lab was used by multiple organizations for the development of new products, regression testing of new versions of software, implementation testing, and training.

Systems Engineering Supervisor

 

Lead a team of Senior Unix System Engineers responsible for continuous improvements and maintenance of an automated provisioning system for the installation and configuration of Solaris and Red Hat Linux operating systems.  Administered and maintained Bugzilla bug-tracking system.  Set team priorities based on consultation with Product Management. Served as primary liaison to QA engineers responsible for testing new products developed by the Unix team.

 

VERIZON   Baltimore/DC Area                      2/2000 – 5/2002

Systems Engineer

 

Full life-cycle engineering product development from initial design to ongoing maintenance of the automated provisioning system.  The automated provisioning system enabled a complete hands-off installation and configuration of the Operating System and additional third-party software. The system was crucial to the rapid deployment of new customer systems and maintaining standard system configurations across multiple data centers. The system was comprised of a web based configuration user interface, a modular installation engine, and utilized a combination of Unix shell scripting, Perl, HTML, Solaris Jumpstart, and Red Hat Kickstart technologies. Revision control of all software code was maintained using the open source Concurrent Versions System (CVS). Produced all associated documentation including standard operating procedures, engineering specifications and QA test plans.

 

Responsible for compiling and testing new software and vendor patches to be integrated into the provisioning system. Regression tested new versions of software. Provided system administration for a worldwide server infrastructure that comprised the automated provisioning system.

 

Was part of a team that received an award for rapidly developing and deploying an asset monitoring system for customer Unix infrastructure. Spearheaded an effort to replace commercial licensed versions of software with open source software to reduce licensing fees.
