An integral part of the Substation, Protection and Telecommunication team supporting the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) management of substation daily activities and contracted assignments located in one of four operating yards: Hewlett, Hicksville, Brentwood and Riverhead, covering all areas of Long Island. 

Duties include but are not limited to:  supervising of all district electrical maintenance, electrical construction and emergency repair of substation equipment, assigned electric equipment in Gas and Electric Production Plants, Operating Headquarters, networks, consumer equipment as requested, as well as new capital construction projects. 

Supervising of all district Structural Service Section crews engaged in foundations, painting, buildings, fences, and grounds maintenance work, coordination of various contractor work with in substations.

Enforcement of policies in the areas of accident prevention, sick leave, suggestions, tools and equipment, personnel development. Maintaining cost controls and productivity.  Preparing of reports as required. 

Assigned to System stand-by supervisor duties on scheduled basis. Assigned to storm restoration duties as needed during severe weather conditions which may compromise the electrical system.

High Voltage Cable Splicer

 

Responsible for the installation, troubleshooting, and repair of high voltage 650VDC traction and negative return cables, 4KV/15KV/27KV high tension AC feeder cables, and 130VDC control cables routed through manholes & conduits between substations throughout the PATH system.

Under the supervision of an Electrical Foreman, the Cable Splicer will locate faults using Meggers and High Pot testers on EPR, rubber, and PILC lead sheathed cable. Install, remove, rack, splice, & arc-proof high, medium, and low voltage DC & AC power cables. The Cable Splicer also cleans and maintains tunnel cable, pull chambers, installs and splices new DC & AC power cables, potheads and terminations into switchgear and rectifiers.  The duties of a Cable Splicer also necessitate working with propane torches while splicing on the high-tension cable system, splicing cables with heat shrink as well as hot lead compounds, application of protective grounding to de-energized cables and requires ability to work from heights and in confined spaces in manholes and substations.

Installation, splice, and testing of 130VDC control cables and low voltage telecommunications cables throughout subway system.

 

Installed and spliced 1 5/8” antenna cable in tunnels

Installation of  TTB, CTB, and BTB in manholes and along benchwall

Installation of hangers and arms to rack newly installed cables

Using tone generators, TDR, and meggers to locate faults in cables

Talking out control/telephone cables to ensure proper splicing of pairs

Installed and spliced 2KCmil cable for 600VDC traction and negative return

Mounted and installed buss bars for negative return and equalization

Installed and spliced 2/0 & 4/0 130VDC battery cables

 

Duties also included and were not limited to: Calling into trainmaster and tower to set up train flagging and speed restriction in work area on active subway tracks, manhole surveying, job surveys with MS-1, Access & Protection for contractors working in designated areas where damage to cable could occur, working from bucket trucks on elevated structures.
